Preces and Responses – Nā Pule a me nā Pane

These Responses in the Hawaiian language are based on King Kamehameha IV's translation of the Book of Common Prayer (Ka Buke Hoʻomana) in 1862. Composed for the Evensong services at St. Andrew's Cathedral, Honolulu.

Kahuna.  E ka Haku, e wehe mai ʻoe i ko mākou mau lehelehe.

ʻŌlelopane.  I hoʻomaikaʻi aku ai ko mākou mau waha iā ʻoe.

Kahuna.  E ke Akua, e hiki koke mai e hōʻola iā mākou.

ʻŌlelopane.  E ka Haku, e kōkua koke mai iā mākou.

Kahuna.  E hoʻonani ʻia ka Makua, a me ke Keiki, a me ka ʻUhane Hemolele.

ʻŌlelopane.  E like me ia i kinohi, a i kēia wā, a mau loa aku, i ke ao pau ʻole. ʻAmene.

Kahuna.  E hoʻomaikaʻi ʻia ka Haku.

ʻŌlelopane.  E hoʻonani ʻia ka inoa o ka Haku.

ʻŌlelopane.  A mai lawe aku i kou ʻUhane Hemolele mai o mākou aku.

Translation

Priest.  O Lord, open thou our lips.

Answer.  And our mouth shall open thy praise.

Priest.  O God, make speed to save us.

Answer.  O Lord, make haste to help us.

Priest.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.

Answer.  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Priest.  Praise ye the Lord.

Answer.  The Lord's name be praised.

Priest.  The Lord be with you. 

Answer.  And with thy Spirit.

Priest.  Let us pray.

Answer.  Lord, have mercy on us. Christ, have mercy on us. Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Priest.  O Lord, show thy mercy upon us.

Answer.  And grant us thy salvation.

Priest.  O Lord, save the King/Queen.

Answer.  And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee.

Priest.  Endure thy ministers with righteousness.

Answer.  And make thy chosen people joyful. 

Priest.  O Lord, save thy people.

Answer.  And bless thine inhertance. 

Priest.  Give peace in our time, O Lord.

Answer.  Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God.

Priest.  O God, make our hearts clean within us.

Answer.  And take not thy Holy Spirit from us.
